Faculty of 1000 Medicine is a scientific literature awareness tool that highlights and evaluates the most interesting papers published in medicine, based on the recommendations of 2,500 leading international researchers and clinicians. Produced by BioMed Central, this resource highlights papers on the basis of their scientific merit and clinical relevance, regardless of the reputation of the journal in which they were published.
The medical literature available here is organized according to subject keywords rather than journal titles. Individual entries use categorizations such as Must Read or Recommended and provide additional details at a glance, including whether the subject matter presents a hypothesis, new finding, refutation, or confirmation; is controversial or a technical advance; or changes practice. Additionally, users can view the evaluations of the article by the faculty members for that subject specialty, directly link to the PubMed abstract, or immediately access the full text of articles available through BioMed Central.
To access the materials, users can browse by subject or All of Medicine, perform advanced searches, view the top 10 articles in a particular subject or for the entire database, or check out the “Hidden Jewels” category. (Users can also search in BioMed Central or in PubMed directly from the Faculty of 1000 Medicine advanced search page.) Citations can be sent via e-mail or directly imported into a citation management application such as EndNote. In addition, users can register for free to get special personalization options to get quick access to the most relevant papers in one’s area of expertise, such as e-mail alerts and the ability to store searches.
